ABOUT

COMMON TONE ARTS

COMMON |ˈkämən | TONE | tōn

NOUN 1. A SHARED NOTE, OR TONE, BETWEEN TWO OTHERWISE UNRELATED CHORDS THAT OFTEN SERVES AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN DISTANT KEYS

In music, a Common Tone is used to help connect one distantly related chord or key to another. We believe that art is the bridge that can connect distantly related people and cultures together — that can bring us together in our shared aspirations, illuminate the human experience, and transcend our limitations.

BRIAN KAI CHIN | FOUNDING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Common Tone Arts and the Institute for Creativity is uniquely poised to make a significant demonstration of the effectiveness of bold arts creation and education. I understand that if artists are to help move the needle toward a more just and compassionate world, we need to radically reimagine how we develop and inspire the generations to come. All too often, even the most progressive arts programs are codified in rigid procedural thinking, overemphasize robotic technique and premature specialization, reward safe and passive musicianship and artistry, nurture a narrow intention of purpose, and stifle exploration and individual creativity.

With the audacity to ask hard questions, willingness to push boundaries of tradition, and fearlessness in our imagination, it is my hope we can work together to build a program that can nurture artists in the ever increasing abstract and complex 21st-century world. By maximizing our heritage and driving innovation for the future, I hope to work with all of you to inspire a true evolution in arts education.
